Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal has expressed confidence in his recovery and preparation as he makes strides to return to form after battling injury setbacks over the past year. The 14-time French Open champion, who has hinted at retirement after this season, faced challenges due to a hip injury necessitating surgery last year and a subsequent muscle tear in Brisbane earlier this year.
Nadal, now 37 years old, has been steadily reintegrating into the competitive circuit during the clay court season. He recently competed in Barcelona and Madrid before arriving in Rome for the Masters event, demonstrating a determined effort to regain peak performance.
Speaking to reporters, Nadal shared his sentiments on his progress: “That didn’t happen since a super long time ago. That’s good news. I need to keep going. I need to keep exploring how I’ll be able to manage to play every day. But yeah, I’m happy the way that I feel today.”
Reflecting on recent challenges, including tough moments in his last few tournaments and initial training sessions in Rome, Nadal highlighted the positive trend in his recovery: “But in general, the line’s going up, without a doubt. Happy to be today where I am, because one month ago for me it was almost impossible to think that I’ll be able to play in Barcelona, then in Madrid and now being here in Rome.”
Nadal emphasized his cautious approach to avoid undue risks during matches, underscoring the importance of strategic play and careful management of his physical condition. His recent performance in Madrid, enduring two consecutive days of play and a three-hour match, served as a pivotal test of his capabilities.
As the French Open approaches on May 26, Nadal remains focused on the challenges ahead, particularly in navigating the unpredictability of clay court matches. “All the matches are difficult and more unpredictable than they used to be for me, especially on clay. I accept that role. I accept that challenge,” Nadal affirmed.
His determination to overcome setbacks and approach each match with resilience underscores his commitment to reclaiming peak performance on the court as he readies himself for the prestigious Roland Garros tournament.
