Controversy Surrounds Cristiano Ronaldo’s Gesture in Al Nassr’s Saudi Pro League Victory

Cristiano Ronaldo found himself at the center of criticism following Al Nassr’s 3-2 triumph over Al Shabab in a gripping Saudi Pro League encounter on Sunday. While the Portugal forward had opened the scoring with a 21st-minute penalty, the match’s conclusion saw Ronaldo making a gesture that sparked controversy.

After the final whistle, social media videos surfaced showing Ronaldo cupping his ear and repeatedly pumping his hand forward in front of his pelvic area. The action seemed directed at rival Al Shabab supporters. In the background, chants of “Messi” were audible, alluding to Ronaldo’s longstanding football rival from Argentina.

Although the incident wasn’t captured by television cameras, Saudi pundits voiced their opinion, suggesting Ronaldo should face sanctions. While there has been no official response, Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat reported that the national football federation (SAFF) had initiated an investigation into the matter.

“The disciplinary committee is facing the biggest test. We will wait and see,” remarked Waleed Al Farraj, a prominent Saudi writer and television host, on the social media platform X. He emphasized that regardless of fame, every action has its limits, echoing the sentiment prevalent in major leagues.

As of now, Al Nassr has not provided an official comment on the incident.

This is not the first time Ronaldo has faced criticism for his post-match conduct. In April last year, he seemingly grabbed his genitals after a league game against Al Hilal, which Al Nassr lost 2-0. Earlier this month, he attracted attention when he picked up an Al Hilal scarf thrown at him, placed it in his shorts, and then discarded it while walking towards the tunnel after Al Nassr’s 2-0 defeat in the Riyadh Season Cup final.

The 39-year-old Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr as a free agent in late 2022, has been a standout performer in the Saudi league. Topping the scoring charts with 22 goals in 20 appearances this season, he has played a pivotal role in Al Nassr’s current standing as the league’s second-best team with 52 points, four behind leaders Al Hilal, who hold a game in hand. As the SAFF investigates the recent incident, Ronaldo’s on-field brilliance continues to be accompanied by off-field controversies, making headlines in the Saudi football scene.
