Neymar Ruled Out of Copa America Due to Prolonged Recovery from Knee Surgery

Brazilian forward Neymar will miss the upcoming Copa America as he continues to recover from knee surgery, according to national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar. Neymar, Brazil’s top scorer, underwent surgery last month for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in his left knee, sustained while on international duty in October.

Lasmar stated on Tuesday that Neymar is not expected to be fit until August, and the recovery process will not be expedited to enable his participation in the Copa America scheduled from June 20 to July 14 in the United States.

“There won’t be time, it’s too early, there’s no point skipping steps to recover sooner and taking unnecessary risks,” explained Lasmar during an interview with Brazilian radio station Radio 98 FM. He emphasized the importance of allowing Neymar the necessary time for a full recovery, aiming for a return at the start of the 2024 season in Europe.

Neymar, currently playing for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, has faced injury challenges since joining in August. The decision to prioritize Neymar’s long-term recovery underscores Brazil’s commitment to the player’s well-being and readiness for the subsequent season.

Brazil has been drawn into Group D for the Copa America alongside Colombia, Paraguay, and a CONCACAF qualifier. The absence of Neymar will be a notable setback for the team as they prepare for the prestigious tournament.
