Brighton & Hove Albion’s manager, Roberto De Zerbi, emphasized the importance of returning to their winning ways, drawing inspiration from their previous season’s performance. The Premier League club secured their first European win by defeating Dutch powerhouse Ajax Amsterdam with a score of 2-0 in the Europa League on Thursday.
Brighton, which finished sixth in the English top-flight last season and qualified for European competition for the first time in the club’s history, ended a five-game winless streak in all competitions with a victorious performance against Ajax.
Notably, Ajax currently finds themselves struggling in the Eredivisie, positioned 17th in the league and recently parting ways with manager Maurice Steijn.
After a loss and a draw in their initial two Europa League matches, Brighton is currently placed third in Group B, which includes leaders Marseille and second-placed AEK Athens.
Commenting on the victory, De Zerbi said, “The most important news is that we kept a clean sheet, but on Sunday we have another big game, and we need to be ready,” as he referred to their upcoming Premier League fixture against Fulham.
De Zerbi also acknowledged the significance of securing their first European victory for Brighton. He expressed pride in offering this experience to the fans, the club, and the owner.
He continued by emphasizing the need for Brighton to alter their current mood, regain their winning momentum, and elevate their gameplay, seeking to replicate the performance levels of the previous season. Currently, Brighton is placed seventh in the Premier League, having collected 16 points from nine matches, while Fulham holds the 13th position in the league.
