Billie Jean King, the legendary tennis player and namesake of the Billie Jean King Cup, has expressed the need for a comprehensive reevaluation of the tennis calendar, citing concerns over scheduling as a barrier to top women’s players’ participation in the tournament. The Billie Jean King Cup Finals, a prestigious women’s team event involving 12 nations with a prize purse of $9 million, is set to occur from November 7-12 in Seville, Spain, right after the WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico.
Notably, due to this tight scheduling, Polish star Iga Swiatek has decided to skip the Billie Jean King Cup Finals for the second consecutive year. Additionally, U.S. Open champion Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, the two highest-ranked American players, are conspicuously absent from the U.S. team roster.
When Swiatek withdrew from the tournament in 2022 due to insufficient recovery time after the WTA Finals, she expressed concerns about the impact of the sport’s tightly packed schedule on players’ health and criticized the sport’s governing bodies. These repeated incidents have raised questions about the organization and planning of the tennis calendar.
King, who once reigned as a top tennis player and is now an influential figure in the sport, voiced her concerns about the ongoing uncertainty regarding tournament dates. She emphasized the importance of having a clear schedule in advance, stating, “I kind of want to know the schedule ahead of time, not keep waiting to know when any of the tournaments are going to happen.”
