Jenni Hermoso, the Spanish women’s football star, has made her comeback in the national team’s squad for the first time since the Women’s World Cup victory in August. This return comes after the controversial incident where former Spanish FA (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales kissed her during the presentation ceremony.
Hermoso, currently playing for the Mexican club Pachuca, has been included in the squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Switzerland and Italy.
Luis Rubiales announced his resignation last month, following the backlash caused by the kiss, which was perceived by many as unsolicited and raised concerns about sexism in sports. Rubiales insists the kiss was mutual and consensual.
Jenni Hermoso, aged 33, was notably absent from Spain’s previous matches against Sweden and Switzerland in September. Coach Montse Tome had justified her absence as a measure to “protect her.”
In response, Hermoso expressed her disappointment, highlighting that her exclusion from the squad indicated that nothing had changed at the RFEF, even after Rubiales’ resignation. Rubiales is currently under investigation by Spain’s High Court for alleged sexual assault and coercion following a criminal complaint filed by Hermoso.
Coach Montse Tome explained that Hermoso’s inclusion in the squad was based on her noticeable improvement and that the team was eager to have her back, with the goal of focusing on future competitions, particularly the Olympic Games.
The RFEF, following a player boycott in the aftermath of the World Cup, committed to making “immediate and profound changes.” This resulted in several senior officials being asked to leave their positions as part of an agreement with the players. Additionally, former Spain coach Jorge Vilda was dismissed last month.
Tome emphasized that changes had indeed occurred within the federation and that they aimed to move forward by focusing on football. She noted that her relationship with the players was good and professional, discouraging any speculation regarding their interactions.
