Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman remains hopeful of a positive result against France in their upcoming European Championship qualifier, despite his team being plagued by injuries.
Speaking at a press conference, Koeman expressed his belief that unpredictable results are common in football, emphasizing that the Dutch team has the capability to challenge France.
While acknowledging that the Netherlands is dealing with numerous injuries, including notable players like Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, Cody Gakpo, and Memphis Depay, Koeman emphasized that injuries do not always dictate the outcome of a match. He cited examples of surprising results in football matches that defy expectations.
The Dutch team suffered further setbacks with goalkeeper Mark Flekken, Steven Berghuis, and Teun Koopmeiners also withdrawing due to injuries. Koeman attributed these injuries partly to a congested football calendar.
Koeman has been an advocate for addressing the demanding football calendar at UEFA meetings, but he expressed frustration at the continued challenges posed by a crowded schedule. He also referred to the upcoming 2030 World Cup, which will involve matches on three continents, as an example of the calendar’s intensifying demands.
Despite the injuries, Koeman sees potential in young goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen from Brighton & Hove Albion. He humorously remarked on Verbruggen’s recent error against Liverpool and mentioned discussing the matter with the young goalkeeper.
France currently leads Group B with a perfect record from five matches. The Netherlands is tied for second place with nine points from four games, alongside Greece, which has played an additional match. The clash between the Netherlands and France promises to be a pivotal moment in the European Championship qualifier.
