The incident occurred when Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi had an angry exchange with officials on the touchline.
In the 69th minute, De Zerbi was shown a yellow card by referee Anthony Taylor for protesting vehemently after Brighton was denied a penalty claim when Kaoru Mitoma’s shot appeared to strike the arm of Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk. Despite being booked, De Zerbi continued to protest the decision.
Klopp, known for his own passionate interactions with referees in the past, stepped in to defuse the situation. He attempted to calm down De Zerbi, recognizing that the situation could escalate further.
Klopp later commented on the incident, saying, “In the moment when he got a bit outraged, I used my age and tried to calm him down.” He added that he was not entirely sure what De Zerbi was upset about but believed it might have been related to the penalty decision.
De Zerbi acknowledged Klopp’s intervention, expressing his respect for the Liverpool manager and his agreement with Klopp’s behavior. He maintained that he believed there was a clear penalty in that situation and had conveyed his thoughts to the referee in a respectful manner.
