Kwon Soon-woo’s behavior came to light after a video of his meltdown following a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 loss to Thailand’s Kasidit Samrej went viral on various social media platforms. The video, which has accumulated over one million views on China’s Weibo platform, has not only drawn attention from global audiences but also ignited anger among South Korean netizens.
The incident unfolded during the second round of the men’s singles competition at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center in eastern China. Kwon Soon-woo, ranked 112th, had been widely expected to secure victory against his Thai opponent, who was ranked at 634th.
The Korean Sport and Olympic Committee (KSOC) issued a statement on Tuesday expressing their deep disappointment in Kwon’s actions. The KSOC pledged to take appropriate measures to address the situation comprehensively after the conclusion of the Asian Games.
Even South Korea’s vice minister of culture, sports, and tourism expressed regret over the player’s behavior in the wake of his defeat. Kwon Soon-woo has since issued an apology to Kasidit and his South Korean supporters, conveying his remorse through a handwritten note posted on social media. In his statement, Kwon acknowledged his reckless conduct and recognized that it was inappropriate for a national team player.
