Germany Ends Losing Streak with 2-1 Friendly Win Against France

In an international friendly that held significance beyond the result, Euro 2024 hosts Germany defeated France 2-1 on Tuesday, marking their first victory in six matches. The win provided a much-needed confidence boost for Germany, who had endured a challenging period leading to the recent departure of coach Hansi Flick.

Germany’s performance was resurgent under the temporary management of sports director Rudi Voeller, who guided them to victory against the 2022 World Cup runners-up, France. Although France did not field their strongest team, with captain Kylian Mbappe among those on the bench, Germany showcased a vastly improved display compared to their previous outing—a 4-1 home loss to Japan that led to Flick’s dismissal.

The match began with a swift start for Germany as Thomas Mueller netted a goal in the fourth minute, capitalizing on a fine 13-pass move. This early breakthrough set the tone for Germany’s determined performance.

Mueller, reflecting on the team’s recent turmoil, remarked, “It was a crazy situation in the past three days. But congratulations to Rudi and his staff on how they dealt with it. We did what we had to, we worked hard and we were rewarded for it. We should not read too much into this win, but for us, it was a small emotional release.”

Germany’s objective extended beyond the result, as they sought to rebuild their reputation as a football powerhouse and reinvigorate the enthusiasm of their home fans for Euro 2024.

France gradually found their rhythm in the game and posed a threat, with Randal Kolo Muani and Aurelien Tchouameni pressuring the German defense. Tchouameni’s low drive in the 57th minute forced a commendable save from Marc Andre ter Stegen, who continued to deny Antoine Griezmann’s efforts, tipping his shot over the bar in the 82nd minute.

Germany’s Leroy Sane played a pivotal role, scoring in the 87th minute to seal the win. However, his challenge on Marcus Thuram two minutes later resulted in a penalty for France, with Griezmann reducing the deficit for the visitors.

Reflecting on the match, Rudi Voeller expressed his satisfaction, stating, “It is important for the players, the federation to play like that, especially in the first half, it was a top performance. It was a relief for all of us. It just feels good, especially after the recent defeats.”

Germany’s victory not only ended their losing streak but also provided a glimmer of hope and positivity as they prepare to host Euro 2024.
