Serbian basketball player Borisa Simanic faced a harrowing ordeal during a match at the Basketball World Cup, resulting in the removal of one of his kidneys. The incident occurred during a game against South Sudan, leading to serious medical complications that required multiple surgeries.
The Serbian basketball federation disclosed that the initial surgery took place on the night of August 30th-31st, immediately after Simanic sustained a blow to his midsection during the match. Following the first operation, medical professionals closely monitored his postoperative recovery. Regrettably, due to unforeseen complications, a subsequent surgery was deemed necessary, which occurred on September 3rd.
Simanic is currently receiving medical care at a hospital in Manila, where he continues his recovery process. The incident has cast a shadow over the 19th edition of FIBA’s flagship event, which is being co-hosted by the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia.
In a heartwarming gesture of sportsmanship, South Sudan’s Nuni Omot, who was involved in the incident, extended a heartfelt apology to Simanic. While match officials did not initially perceive any foul play, Omot expressed his deep regret for the unfortunate event. He emphasized that no player should have to endure such a traumatic experience.
The basketball community, both locally and internationally, stands united in wishing Borisa Simanic a swift and complete recovery, hoping to see him back on the court in the near future.
