In an official statement released on Sunday, LaLiga stated, “Facing the exceptional weather situation in Madrid… the President of the RFEF, the Sports Minister, and the CEOs of Atlético de Madrid and Sevilla have taken the decision to postpone the match. The new date and time of the match will be communicated soon.”
The decision to postpone the match came in response to a severe weather warning issued by AEMET for the regions of Madrid, La Mancha, and Andalusia. This severe weather advisory heightened concerns over the safety of both players and fans, prompting the prudent course of action.
Madrid’s mayor, Luis Martínez Almeida, issued an urgent appeal to the population, urging them to stay indoors, given that the city is bracing for what he described as “the heaviest rainfall since records began 49 years ago” on Sunday afternoon.
In terms of the LaLiga standings, Atletico currently holds the second position with seven points, sharing this spot with Girona, Barcelona, and Cadiz.
