Jack Sock, the renowned American tennis player, has unveiled his decision to bid adieu to the sport after the U.S. Open. The former world number eight shared his retirement plans on Sunday, marking the conclusion of a remarkable career that spanned over 14 years.
The 30-year-old Sock has etched his name in the tennis annals with a tally of four ATP singles titles and an impressive 17 tour-level doubles trophies. Among his most notable accomplishments are the 2017 ATP Masters 1000 title in Paris and men’s doubles triumphs at Wimbledon in 2014 and 2018, in addition to the 2018 U.S. Open.
Sock’s triumphs extend beyond the traditional tennis sphere, as he secured a mixed doubles gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, alongside a bronze in the men’s doubles category.
Currently, Sock is partnering with fellow American John Isner at Flushing Meadows, the venue for the U.S. Open. Notably, Isner is also poised to step away from professional tennis following the conclusion of this year’s final Grand Slam.
In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Sock addressed his younger self: “To the eight-year-old boy who immediately fell in love with the sport of tennis. I hope I made you proud.” Reflecting on his journey, he added, “It’s been 14 years of memories I will never forget. From winning four Grand Slams, Olympic gold and bronze, top 10 rankings in singles and doubles, and competing on the Davis Cup and Laver Cup teams, it’s been beyond what I could’ve ever dreamed.”
Sharing his forthcoming plans, Sock expressed, “Flushing Meadows has been a part of my life since I was 17, and this year’s U.S. Open will mark the final chapter of my career. I anticipate crafting memories in front of the best fans in the world one last time.”
The U.S. Open is scheduled to take place from August 28 to September 10. According to reports from U.S. media outlets, Sock might transition to the sport of pickleball post-retirement, indicating that his athletic journey might continue in a different direction.
