Hong Kong badminton star Angus Ng’s campaign at the All England Open ended in the round of 16 on Thursday after a straight-game loss to Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew in Birmingham.
Ng had entered the match with momentum after a hard-fought comeback victory over Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia in the previous round, winning 19-21, 21-16, 21-12. However, he continued to struggle against Loh, having lost all four of their previous meetings.
Loh dominated the opening game, taking it 21-15. Ng fell behind 4-10 in the second but staged a strong comeback to level the score at 14-all. Despite his efforts, he was unable to complete the turnaround, eventually losing 21-17.
With the win, Loh advanced to the quarter-finals, where he will face China’s world No. 1 Shi Yuqi. Shi secured his spot with a 21-11, 21-19 victory over Chou Tien-chen of Chinese Taipei. Shi is now the tournament favorite following Viktor Axelsen’s surprise exit earlier in the day.
