After nearly two weeks without a match, the Sam Houston women’s tennis team is set to begin Conference USA play on Friday afternoon against Jacksonville State. The matchup marks the start of a two-match road trip, with the Bearkats facing Kennesaw State on Sunday.
“We’re excited to get into Conference USA action,” head coach Rob Hubbard said. “This league has a lot of parity, and every match will be a challenge.”
Sam Houston finished pre-conference play with a 4-4 record. The team earned two wins over LSU Shreveport, along with victories against Prairie View and Lamar.
“The road win over Lamar was a big one for us,” Hubbard said. “In all of our matches, especially against strong teams like Texas A&M and Rice, we’ve shown great fight. We’ll need that same energy on this trip.”
Jacksonville State enters Friday’s match with a 5-4 record, having secured wins against Presbyterian, Eastern Kentucky, Alabama A&M, Florida A&M, and Lipscomb.
The 2025 Bearkat roster includes sophomore returner Aaliyah Hohmann, along with transfers Christine Jevicky, Sara Sadadinovic, Jacqueline Schnabel, Nayuma Subba, and Adithi Venkatakrishnan. Freshman Elia Fitcher rounds out the squad.
Weather issues have disrupted Sam Houston’s schedule, with four matches canceled due to rain in the past month. The team last played on March 2.
“The players are eager to compete,” Hubbard said. “The weather looks good in Alabama, and we’re ready to get back on the court.”
This weekend’s road trip is the start of six consecutive away matches for the Bearkats. Their next home match is scheduled for April 11 against Middle Tennessee.
