No. 44 UC Irvine earned a convincing 6-1 victory over the Navy men’s tennis team on Thursday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium in Irvine, California. Navy’s second match of the day against UC San Diego was canceled due to poor weather.
The match started with a competitive doubles battle. Navy took an early lead as Graydon Buckingham and Zach Quattro cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles over Ruining Huang and Rithvik Krishna. However, UC Irvine responded with a narrow 6-4 victory at No. 2, where Sohrob Amiryavari and Lawee Sherif defeated George Cutone and Herrick Legaspi. The deciding doubles match went to the Anteaters, as the No. 1 team of Andy Nguyen and Noah Zamora—ranked 90th in the nation—secured a 7-6 (7-5) win over Luke Garner and Jake Young.
In singles play, UC Irvine took control by winning five matches in straight sets. Zamora, ranked No. 54 in the country, defeated Legaspi 6-4, 6-4 at the top flight. Navy’s lone point came from Young, who earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Krishna at No. 3 singles.
Navy will wrap up its spring break trip on Friday with matches against Point Loma and Loyola Marymount.
