Charlotte Caslick will not return to the Australian rugby sevens squad this year, instead dedicating herself to the 15-a-side format in preparation for the Women’s Rugby World Cup in England this August and September.
The Olympic gold medalist is set to make her Super Rugby Women’s debut for the Queensland Reds after being named on the bench for their match against the NSW Waratahs at Ballymore in Brisbane on Sunday.
Although Caslick had always planned to play for the Reds this season, she has now opted out of the remaining legs of the World Rugby Sevens Series to fully focus on her transition to the longer format. Her performance in Super Rugby will be key in securing a spot in the Wallaroos squad for the World Cup.
“Charlotte is a world-class athlete,” said Reds coach Andrew Fraser. “With her speed and rugby intellect developed over more than a decade, she brings something really exciting to the team. She is eager to make an impression.”
Caslick has been a key figure in Australian rugby since joining the national sevens squad in 2013. She won Olympic gold in Rio 2016, claimed multiple World Series titles, and was twice named World Sevens Player of the Year. She also briefly played rugby league for the Sydney Roosters in the NRLW in 2020.
Caslick isn’t the only Australian sevens star featuring for the Reds. Paris Olympic hopefuls Kahli Henwood (wing), Teagan Levi (centre), and current sevens captain Bella Nasser (bench) are also in the squad. Meanwhile, Maddison Levi remains sidelined with a finger injury.
The Reds head into Sunday’s match after a 22-19 win over Fijian Drua in Lautoka last weekend. The Waratahs also started their campaign with a victory, defeating the Western Force 26-21 in Sydney.
