BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team delivered a dominant performance Tuesday afternoon, defeating North Alabama 10-3 at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the victory, the Bulldogs improved to 9-8 on the season, while the Lions dropped to 3-12.
Samford’s offense came alive with 11 hits, led by outfielder Trey Higgins, who went 3-for-5 with a grand slam and a career-high seven RBIs. Jake Souders also contributed, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
On the mound, Mason Blasche (1-0) earned the win, pitching four scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out three. Brooks Rice, Noah Berry, Joseph Lee, and Drew Druckenmiller also saw action for Samford.
For North Alabama, Pete Craska recorded an RBI while going 1-for-4 at the plate. Pitcher Landon Scruggs (0-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of relief.
Game Summary
North Alabama struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Samford responded in the fourth when Higgins singled to drive in Souders, tying the game 1-1.
The Bulldogs seized control in the fifth, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Souders plated one run, and Higgins followed with a two-RBI single.
Samford broke the game open in the sixth with a six-run inning. Cade Carr and Souders each drove in a run before Higgins launched a grand slam to right field, extending the Bulldogs’ lead to 10-1. North Alabama managed two runs in the eighth, but it was too little, too late.
Looking Ahead
Samford will now prepare for a three-game home series against Evansville. The teams will face off Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
