Quincy Wilson, the most decorated football player to ever wear the Red Rider uniform, has been appointed as the new head coach of Weir High School’s football team. The announcement was confirmed by Weir Athletic Director Sean Blumette on Monday, following approval from the Hancock County Board of Education at its meeting that evening.
“We are tremendously excited,” Blumette said. “Having someone of Quincy’s caliber—both as a player and a coach—return to his alma mater and his hometown is incredible. His energy, passion, and commitment will be a huge asset to our program.”
Wilson, who was named the Kennedy Award winner in 1998, led Weir to an undefeated 14-0 state championship season that same year. He continued his football career at West Virginia University, where he accumulated 2,412 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns over his junior and senior years. Wilson then went on to play five seasons in the NFL before transitioning into coaching, beginning as assistant director of football operations at WVU.
Throughout his coaching career, Wilson has served as an assistant at Glenville State, West Virginia State, and Fairmont State. He was also set to take charge of Rio Grande’s revived football program before parting ways with the university in November. Additionally, Wilson has held the position of head coach at the University of Fort Lauderdale.
Blumette expressed his enthusiasm about Wilson’s interest in the position, noting that the coach reached out after former head coach Frank Sissini took a position at Brooke High School. “When Quincy showed interest, we were thrilled. He wanted to know the process, and we were happy to discuss how he could get involved. After interviewing him via Zoom, our committee was extremely impressed by his passion for Weir High and his vision for the team,” Blumette said.
The Red Riders had a strong 2023-24 season, finishing with an 11-2 record, but struggled in the following year, ending with a 1-9 record. The team is set to lose key players such as quarterback Lucas McAllister and wide receiver Damir Mowder, who is committed to Fairmont State.
Blumette emphasized that hiring someone with Wilson’s experience and legacy is a rare opportunity. “As an athletic director, you don’t get many chances to bring in someone of Quincy’s stature. His return to Weir will undoubtedly generate excitement for the 2025 season.”
Wilson’s appointment signals a new era for the Red Riders, as he looks to revitalize the program with the same dedication and excellence that marked his own football career.
