Badminton legend Datuk Razif Sidek is confident that it’s only a matter of time before Malaysia’s men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani reach the world No. 1 ranking.
The duo, currently ranked No. 2, have emerged as strong contenders on the international circuit. Their latest success came with a victory at the India Open on Sunday, where they triumphed in a three-game final against South Korea’s Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae.
Since August of last year, Sze Fei-Izzuddin have won four out of five finals, including titles at the Japan Open, China Open, and Arctic Open. They also finished second at the World Tour Finals.
Razif believes the pair’s tactical evolution has set them up for more success on the World Tour this year. He said they have the potential to reach the top spot but cautioned that they must maintain their momentum to avoid losing ground in the competitive men’s doubles landscape.
“The key is consistency. If they keep winning, they will get there,” Razif said. “But it will only become harder if they lose their momentum in such an intense field.”
Razif also stressed the importance of maintaining their strong tactical play. Since becoming an independent pair in September, Sze Fei and Izzuddin have continued to grow stronger.
“Sze Fei-Izzuddin are now playing with confidence and maturity. Their game is unpredictable, and their victory at the India Open was impressive,” Razif said. “They must continue this momentum. They are playing smartly, taking risks, and introducing new elements into their game. It’s refreshing to see them living up to their ranking.”
The pair’s breakthrough came with a runner-up finish at the Asian Championships last April, but they struggled to capitalize on that achievement at the time. Since their independence, however, they have gone from strength to strength.
“They have learned to score quickly, protect their leads, and apply pressure,” Razif added. “As they progress, they will face even more pressure, but they’ve handled it well so far, especially when they reach the semi-finals and finals.”
Razif is particularly impressed by the way Sze Fei has improved in front-court play, allowing Izzuddin to dominate from the baseline. “Sze Fei’s ability to create opportunities and force opponents into defense has been crucial. His tactical service also earns them easy points, which is vital in fast-paced matches.”
Izzuddin’s attacking power and the pair’s chemistry make them a formidable team. According to Razif, their ability to work together as a unit has been key to their rise.
Looking ahead, Razif believes that Sze Fei-Izzuddin are on track to break records and win more tournaments. Their next challenge is the All England, scheduled for March 11-16, where they will aim to capture the men’s doubles title, last won by Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong in 2007.
