Aryna Sabalenka kicked off her title defense at the 2025 Australian Open with a commanding victory over Sloane Stephens, defeating the American in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-2. This win not only advances the Belarusian star to the second round but also extends her recent success following her triumph at the Brisbane International earlier this year. Sabalenka’s performance sends a strong message to her competitors in Melbourne as she aims to retain her championship.
In a post-match press conference, the world No. 1 reflected on her evolution as a player over the past few years. Sabalenka noted a significant transformation in her mental approach to the game, stating, “There is a big difference if I compare myself to myself three years ago. Back then I was frustrated and probably would have lost the first set. I’m very happy that I’ve improved my mental toughness. I can stay focused regardless of the score and the situation.” She emphasized her commitment to concentrating on the game, taking it point by point.
Sabalenka also addressed a new rule this season allowing coaches to sit courtside during matches, sharing her thoughts on its implications. “Honestly, I’m not a big fan of this decision. If you do it, then put more seats. I personally like to see the whole team. I want to see all the people in my box, even if I don’t look at everyone. For me, it’s important to have that support,” she explained, highlighting the need for more seating to accommodate her coaching staff. She concluded by reflecting on her biggest takeaway from the previous year: “The key is to focus on yourself and do your best, rather than worrying about defending your title or making history.”
