João Fonseca Makes Waves in Tennis with Two Titles in Less Than a Month

Though he was born after Fernando Meligeni’s career peak and Gustavo Kuerten’s last title, Fonseca is already creating a stir in tennis. Meligeni, who reached a career-high ranking of 25th in 1999, expressed admiration for Fonseca, saying, “João really moves us. We don’t know how far he can go, but we can dream big.”

Fonseca’s remarkable rise began in December, when he won the Next Gen ATP Finals, a tournament for the top eight players under 20. Just days into 2025, he claimed the Challenger of Canberra title, further proving his potential.

Fonseca’s team is led by coach Guilherme Teixeira, who began working with him when he was 12 years old at the Rio de Janeiro Country Club. Teixeira’s support has been crucial to Fonseca’s rapid development.

Former tennis player and Brazil’s Davis Cup captain Ricardo Acioly praised Fonseca’s talent, saying, “He seems destined to be one of the greats. How far will he go? Only time will tell.”

The young Brazilian continued his strong start to the year with a straight-set victory over Argentina’s Tirante, earning a spot in the main draw of the Australian Open.
