Everton secured a spot in the FA Cup fourth round with a 2-0 win over Peterborough at Goodison Park. However, the match was overshadowed by the unexpected dismissal of manager Sean Dyche earlier in the day.
Beto gave Everton the lead just before halftime with a well-taken goal, set up by the talented 17-year-old Harrison Armstrong. In stoppage time, Iliman Ndiaye sealed the win with a penalty, awarded after a foul on substitute Jadel Katongo.
The evening began in shock, as news of Dyche’s departure spread. Former captain Leighton Baines, now coaching the Under-18s, and current captain Seamus Coleman took temporary charge of the team. Baines commented, “I found out today like everyone else. The starting 11 I found out today and that was picked beforehand. We have made small adjustments inside of that which we think will help.”
The players, who were expecting a routine team meeting, were instead told about Dyche’s sacking, creating an unusual atmosphere. Commentators Steve Bower and Martin Keown called it one of the strangest situations they had witnessed.
Despite the uncertainty, Armstrong impressed on the field, earning praise from Baines: “He has been working so hard. He has been in and around the first team, and tonight is another opportunity to showcase himself.”
Peterborough had some chances, with Ricky-Jade Jones, described as the fastest player manager Darren Ferguson has coached, coming close to scoring. However, it was Everton’s night, with Beto’s goal and Ndiaye’s penalty ensuring the victory.
The match saw an injury to Everton’s Armando Broja, who appeared to suffer a serious ankle injury. Keown noted, “Armando Broja is so unlucky with injuries. He has done his ACL before and was out for a long time. Since he’s been at Everton, it has been injury after injury.”
As the club looks ahead, speculation about Dyche’s replacement is growing. David Moyes, a former Everton manager, has emerged as a potential candidate. Keown said, “When you meet David Moyes, you see a man that’s not finished. He’s full of ambition, he had a very good spell here for 10 years… It does just seem like a natural fit.”
Elsewhere in the FA Cup, Cardiff City won 1-0 against Sheffield United, while Fulham triumphed 4-1 over Watford in the “Marco Silva derby,” with goals from Raul Jimenez, Joachim Andersen, and Timothy Castagne.
While Everton’s performance wasn’t particularly brilliant, the win provided a brief break from the chaos surrounding the club. The focus now shifts to the club’s next steps in what will be a crucial managerial transition.
