Madison Keys of the United States continued her impressive run in Australia by reaching the final of the Adelaide International.
Keys was leading Liudmila Samsonova 5-7, 7-5, 3-0 in their semi-final match on Friday when the Russian player withdrew due to an undisclosed injury.
The 29-year-old Keys won the Adelaide event in 2022 and has had strong performances at the Australian Open in Melbourne, where she has reached two semi-finals, one quarter-final, and two fourth rounds.
Keys is also a finalist at the Brisbane International and has made semi-final and quarter-final appearances at the Sydney International.
“It’s unique because we come to Australia after some time off, so we’re usually a bit fresher,” said Keys, an eight-time title winner. “I really enjoy playing here. The courts typically play fast, which I like.”
Keys added, “I’ve always felt great playing in Australia. I lean into that, and being successful here has made me feel very comfortable on these courts.”
Keys will face the winner of the match between top-seeded American Jessica Pegula and Yulia Putintseva in Saturday’s final.
“I’m playing pretty well,” said Keys, who recently married her coach and ATP player Bjorn Fratangelo. “Serving got me out of some tricky situations today, which is always a good sign.”
“We worked on a lot of different things during the off-season, and my goal was to put those into practice when it matters. Staying focused on that has helped me continue playing well.”
