Iga Swiatek is eager to kick off the new season by leading Poland to victory in the United Cup, but she anticipates a challenging match against Karolina Muchova. In Group B, Poland will compete against the Czech Republic and Norway.
The Polish team will begin its campaign on December 30, facing Norway, where Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam champion, will open her 2025 season against the 404th-ranked Malene Helgo. Two days later, Poland will take on the Czech Republic, featuring a highly anticipated rematch of the 2023 French Open final between Swiatek and Muchova.
The two players have faced each other three times, with all matches going the distance. Muchova won their first encounter in 2019 in Prague, while Swiatek emerged victorious in their two meetings in 2023 at the French Open and Montreal.
“It’s always tough battles against Muchova,” Swiatek said. “It’s the first tournament of the year, so you never know what kind of tennis you will bring. You need a few days to feel how you’ll perform on the court. I expect both matches to be tough, especially against the Czech Republic. I’ve always had good battles with Karolina, usually three-setters, so it should be exciting. For now, I’m just focusing on taking it step by step.”
Last season, Poland narrowly missed winning the United Cup, losing to Germany after failing to convert two match points in the final. In her interview, Swiatek expressed her hope that the team can give themselves a strong chance to win this year.
With Swiatek and fellow player Hubert Hurkacz, Poland is considered one of the top contenders for the title. A successful run in the United Cup would serve as excellent preparation for Swiatek ahead of the Australian Open.
