Penn State emerged victorious in the 2024 NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship, defeating Louisville in a thrilling semifinal match that concluded with scores of 25-23, 32-34, 25-20, and 25-17. The Nittany Lions showcased their skill and resilience, taking the match to four sets before securing the championship title.
Jess Mruzik was instrumental in Penn State’s success, leading the team with 29 kills, 14 digs, and four blocks, contributing a total of 33 points. Setter Izzy Starck played a crucial role as well, recording 55 assists and 13 digs, effectively facilitating Mruzik’s performance. On the opposing side, Louisville’s Charitie Luper led her team with 21 kills and six digs, amassing 21.5 points. Setter Nayelis Cabello added 31 assists and 10 digs for the Cardinals.
The match began with Louisville taking a narrow 7-6 lead, thanks to freshman Payton Petersen stepping in for the injured Anna DeBeer. The first set was tightly contested, with the score tied at 23-23 before Penn State clinched the set 25-23, aided by a kill from Maggie Mendelson and a reception-error ace by Louisville.
In the second set, despite a strong start from the Nittany Lions, who led 10-7 and hit .455, the Cardinals rallied back to win a dramatic 34-32, leveling the match at one set apiece. Luper’s nine kills in this set were pivotal in Louisville’s comeback.
The third set saw Penn State regain momentum, with Mendelson’s kill giving the Nittany Lions a 16-11 lead. Mruzik dominated with a match-high 20 kills, 10 of which came in this set, helping Penn State secure a 25-20 victory and a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth set, Penn State jumped to an early 6-1 advantage, capitalizing on their strong offensive play. Mruzik continued to shine, and the Nittany Lions maintained control, extending their lead to 20-14. With Louisville unable to mount a significant response, Penn State closed out the match 3-1, claiming their eighth NCAA championship title.
