Inter Milan delivered a stunning performance on Monday, overwhelming Lazio with a 6-0 victory in a match that showcased their ambitions for the Serie A title.
Lazio, who had been unbeaten at home in the league, started the match competitively, matching Inter for much of the first half in front of their fans at the Stadio Olimpico. However, the tide turned just before halftime when Hakan Çalhanoğlu converted a penalty to give Inter the lead. Federico Dimarco quickly followed, volleying in a cross from Denzel Dumfries to double the advantage just seconds before the break.
Lazio faced challenges in defense, missing regular defender Alessio Romagnoli, and saw Samuel Gigot replace Matias Gila midway through the first half. After Gigot was forced to exit at halftime, coach Marco Baroni had to reorganize his defense yet again, which proved costly as Inter capitalized on the disarray.
Nicolò Barella extended Inter’s lead to 3-0 just six minutes into the second half with a stunning 30-meter volley. Dumfries then added the fourth goal two minutes later, rising above the defense to head the ball into the net.
Carlos Augusto showcased his skill in the box to score the fifth goal in the 77th minute, and Marcus Thuram capped the scoring with his 11th goal of the season in the final minute, further compounding Lazio’s woes.
With this decisive victory, Inter climbed to third place in the Serie A standings, now three points behind leaders Atalanta and one point behind Napoli, with a game in hand. Lazio remains in fifth place.
