Southampton has dismissed manager Russell Martin after a dismal 5-0 defeat to Tottenham, leaving the club at the bottom of the Premier League.
With just one league victory this season, Southampton now finds itself nine points from safety. In a statement, the club confirmed, “We can confirm that we have taken the difficult decision to part ways with our Men’s First Team Manager, Russell Martin.”
This decision coincided with the firing of Wolverhampton head coach Gary O’Neil, as both teams battle relegation. Wolverhampton sits second to last in 19th place, four points ahead of Southampton.
Martin, who led Southampton to promotion to the Premier League last season, has struggled to improve the team’s performance, with the squad losing five of its last six matches. The club noted, “The board have supported Russell and his staff and been open and transparent regarding our expectations. We have all been on the same page in recognizing the urgency of needing results to improve.”
Simon Rusk, the manager of the under-21 team, will take over on an interim basis as the club seeks a new permanent manager.
