North Carolina Signs Belichick as Coach

Bill Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach, is set to take the helm of the University of North Carolina football program, marking his first foray into college coaching. The university announced on Wednesday night that it has reached a five-year agreement with Belichick, pending approval from UNC trustees and the public system’s governors. An introductory press conference has yet to be scheduled.

The decision to hire the 72-year-old Belichick comes after the university parted ways with Mack Brown, the program’s all-time winningest coach, who is 73. Although Belichick has no previous college coaching experience, he is renowned for his success in the NFL, particularly during his tenure with the New England Patriots, where he coached alongside quarterback Tom Brady.

Belichick expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, stating, “I am excited for the opportunity at UNC-Chapel Hill. I grew up around college football with my dad and treasured those times. I have always wanted to coach in college and now I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill.”

His arrival coincides with a transformative period in college athletics, characterized by player mobility through the transfer portal and new endorsement opportunities. UNC Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham highlighted Belichick’s hiring as a strategic move to adapt to these changes. “Bill Belichick is a football legend, and hiring him to lead our program represents a new approach that will ensure Carolina football can evolve, compete and win — today and in the future,” Cunningham said.

Belichick holds 333 career wins in regular-season and postseason NFL play, ranking second all-time behind Don Shula. He has also achieved a record 31 playoff victories. His hiring is notable as he becomes only the second coach to win a Super Bowl and later take on a college head coaching role, following Bill Walsh’s stint at Stanford.

Prior to this appointment, Belichick had been linked to several NFL positions, including a rumored interest from the Atlanta Falcons. His discussions with UNC, first reported by Inside Carolina, surprised many in the football community due to the unconventional nature of the move.

In a recent appearance on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show,” Belichick shared insights about his approach to college football. He emphasized that his program would serve as a pipeline to the NFL, focusing on professional training, nutrition, and techniques that translate to the league.

Belichick began his coaching career in the NFL as an assistant with the Baltimore Colts in 1975 and later served as the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, where he won two Super Bowls. He became head coach of the Patriots in 2000, leading the team to numerous championships alongside Brady.

Now, Belichick will take charge of a UNC program that has experienced peaks but struggles to maintain sustained success. Under Brown, the Tar Heels had a notable nine-win season and an appearance in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game in 2022. Following the decision to part ways with Brown, who coached his last game on November 30, the team has been led by interim coach Freddie Kitchens as they prepare for the Fenway Bowl against UConn on December 28.
