Jones: McCarthy’s Job Outstanding Despite Injuries

The Dallas Cowboys’ head coach Mike McCarthy may be evaluated for a contract extension based on his ability to keep the team competitive despite a string of injuries.

Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ executive vice president of personnel, praised McCarthy’s efforts during a press conference following the NFL’s winter meetings. “I think he’s done outstanding,” Jones stated on Wednesday. “Our guys are playing hard, and he’s got them competing. That was a tough game the other night, but the players put in a strong effort.”

Currently in the final year of his contract, McCarthy previously led the Cowboys to three consecutive 12-win seasons and two NFC East titles. However, this season has been challenging, with the team holding a 5-8 record after losing quarterback Dak Prescott for the season. Additionally, several defensive players, including star edge rusher Micah Parsons, have missed significant time due to injuries.

“When you’re managing a football team, you have to consider everything,” Jones said, acknowledging the impact of injuries on evaluating McCarthy’s performance. “It would be irresponsible not to. I know our fans and opponents may not see the full picture, but we do.”

Parsons’ recent return helped the team secure two consecutive victories, but the Cowboys suffered a 27-20 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night, marred by a critical special teams error following a blocked punt. The Cowboys have endured four significant losses this season and have lost four games by a single score. “Hats off to Mike,” Jones added. “When you look around the league, many teams facing similar situations are already thinking about next year. But Mike has everyone focused on winning each and every game.”

Under McCarthy’s leadership, the Cowboys have struggled in the playoffs, holding a 1-3 record. Last season, they were eliminated by the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round, yet owner Jerry Jones opted for minimal roster changes.

When asked if a decision regarding McCarthy’s future has been reached, Stephen Jones responded, “We’re focused on the next game.” He also dismissed speculation about Bill Belichick, stating, “We’re worried about the next game.”
