Weston McKennie celebrated with an imaginary wand, joined by fellow American Tim Weah, after they made history by combining for a goal in Juventus’ 2-0 victory over Manchester City. This marked the first time in Champions League history that two U.S. players linked up for a goal.
The pivotal moment occurred shortly after both players entered the match as substitutes. McKennie initiated the play from his own half, sending a pass to Weah on the right flank. Although Weah’s initial cross was blocked, he quickly recovered to deliver a perfect ball that McKennie converted with a stunning scissor-kick volley from 10 yards out.
McKennie’s celebration, inspired by his love for Harry Potter, included a nod to the fictional wizard, complete with a lightning bolt tattoo on his finger. “I hope I can do that celebration many more times,” McKennie remarked.
This goal was significant not only for Juventus, moving them up to 14th place in the 36-team standings, but also for McKennie and Weah, both of whom are working to regain their form after injury setbacks.
“It’s nice to score, but winning this match is very important for the team, especially after many draws,” McKennie said in Italian. “These three points against a team like that are crucial for our confidence and for climbing the league table.”
Despite having only five starts in the Italian league this season and one goal to his name, Juventus coach Thiago Motta praised McKennie’s contributions. “Weston can do everything,” Motta stated. “He has a unique physique, great technical quality, and knows how to make runs. When he arrives from the second line, he becomes even more dangerous.”
