The home of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was broken into on Monday night during the broadcast of Monday Night Football, marking the latest incident in a troubling trend of home invasions targeting professional athletes, authorities reported on Tuesday.
According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, no injuries were reported in the incident, but the residence was ransacked. An employee of Burrow discovered the break-in upon arriving at the Anderson Township home, where they found a shattered bedroom window and the interior in disarray. The employee first contacted their mother before calling 911 to report the situation.
Deputies are currently investigating the incident and have reached out to neighbors to gather any available surveillance footage. “Our investigators are exploring every avenue,” said public information officer Kyla Woods.
This break-in follows a series of similar incidents involving professional athletes. In October, the homes of Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were also targeted. Additionally, Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis experienced a burglary on November 2, while Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley Jr. had his home broken into on September 15 during a Minnesota Vikings game.
In response to these incidents, Portis offered a $40,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible. Both the NFL and NBA have issued security alerts to their players, advising them to take extra precautions to safeguard their homes.
League memos obtained by The Associated Press indicate that homes of professional athletes from various sports are increasingly being targeted by organized burglary groups. The NBA has reported that the FBI links some of these burglaries to “transnational South American Theft Groups,” which are described as well-organized and sophisticated, employing advanced techniques such as pre-surveillance, drones, and signal jamming devices.
Officials have noted that some burglary rings conduct extensive surveillance on their targets, including staging home deliveries or posing as maintenance workers or joggers in the neighborhood.
