Carlos Alcaraz experienced a challenging 2024 season, suffering a total of 13 losses, including five notable defeats against players ranked outside the top 20. Among these, three defeats were to opponents ranked 21st, 31st, and 33rd, which, while not catastrophic, fell short of the high expectations set by his recent performances. In this second part of our series, we analyze three of Alcaraz’s most significant losses this season.
Tomas Machac Defeats Alcaraz in Shanghai
After a thrilling victory over Jannik Sinner in the final of the ATP 500 Beijing Open, Alcaraz faced Tomas Machac in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters. Despite his recent success, Alcaraz lost to the world No. 33 in a tightly contested match, with Machac prevailing 7-6, 7-5. This defeat marked another setback for the four-time Grand Slam champion.
Machac, who was aiming for his first Masters 1000 semifinal, capitalized on crucial moments throughout the match. Alcaraz struggled to convert opportunities, particularly in the opening set, where he missed several chances to take control. Despite hitting 25 winners, Alcaraz also recorded 19 unforced errors, while Machac displayed aggressive play, particularly at the net.
The first set culminated in a tiebreak, where Machac secured the win after trading early mini-breaks. He maintained momentum into the second set, breaking Alcaraz at a critical moment to clinch the match.
Alcaraz Falls to Gael Monfils in Cincinnati
In another disappointing outing, Alcaraz was stunned by French veteran Gael Monfils at the Cincinnati Masters. The world No. 46 triumphed over Alcaraz 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in a match that stretched over two days. Frustrated with his performance, Alcaraz smashed his racquet after a particularly challenging fourth game of the deciding set.
The match was characterized by Alcaraz’s strong serving early on, but he failed to capitalize on his chances, particularly in the second set tiebreak, which was interrupted by rain. Monfils, who defended six of seven break points, ultimately took control in the final set, breaking Alcaraz early and holding on to secure the win.
Alcaraz acknowledged his shortcomings in this match, vowing to improve his composure in future contests.
Botic van de Zandschulp Stuns Alcaraz at the US Open
Alcaraz’s most significant loss of the season came at the US Open, where he suffered a shocking defeat to world No. 74 Botic van de Zandschulp. The Dutchman won decisively, 6-1, 7-5, 6-4, ending Alcaraz’s impressive streak of 15 consecutive Grand Slam victories.
Despite a stronger showing in the second set, Alcaraz struggled with consistency, committing over 30 unforced errors. Van de Zandschulp capitalized on his opportunities, converting six of nine break points while maintaining composure throughout the match.
The match began poorly for Alcaraz, who quickly fell behind as van de Zandschulp dominated the first set. Although Alcaraz managed to break back in the second set, he could not maintain his momentum, ultimately succumbing to the pressure as van de Zandschulp secured the victory with a commanding performance.
These defeats highlight the challenges Alcaraz faced in 2024, as he navigated a season filled with unexpected setbacks. As he looks to regroup and return to form, the young Spaniard will be eager to learn from these experiences and regain his status among the top players in the game.
