Atletico Madrid faced a rare challenge on Sunday, conceding three goals in a Spanish league match for the first time this season. Despite this, they triumphed over Sevilla with a dramatic 4-3 victory, powered by a brace from Antoine Griezmann. This win marks Atletico’s ninth consecutive victory across all competitions under Diego Simeone.
The win allowed Atletico to maintain its third-place position in La Liga, three points ahead of fourth-place Athletic Bilbao, which secured a 2-0 win against Villarreal earlier in the day.
Atletico started strong, with Rodrigo De Paul scoring a stunning opener in the 10th minute. However, Sevilla quickly turned the tide, with goals from Dodi Lukébakio, Isaac Romero, and Juanlu Sanchez giving them a 3-1 lead early in the second half. The absence of vocal home support due to a ticket dispute left Atletico struggling to find their rhythm at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Known for their resilience, Atletico mounted a comeback. Griezmann found the net in the 62nd minute, followed by Samuel Lino’s equalizer in the 79th minute, a low shot from 30 yards after a flurry of substitutions by Simeone. Griezmann then scored the winner in stoppage time, solidifying Atletico’s third place with 35 points, just one behind city rivals Real Madrid and three behind league leaders Barcelona.
“We struggled to get into the game,” Griezmann acknowledged. “We missed the support of the fans behind the goal. But in the end, we managed to come back.”
Athletic Bilbao Secures Fourth Place
In other action, Athletic Bilbao reinforced its fourth-place standing with a 2-0 victory over Villarreal, a team vying for a Champions League spot. Aitor Paredes opened the scoring with a header from a corner in the 14th minute, and Iñaki Williams doubled the lead midway through the second half.
Despite the victory, the match was overshadowed by a silent protest from a fan group in response to a rift with the club president, who had reported threats to police earlier in the week. Several players showed solidarity with the president, and the team did not acknowledge the fans after the match.
“It’s a very sad win, and a time for everyone to pull together,” said club captain Óscar De Marcos. “The silence was notable during the game, but we need to keep doing our job.”
Real Sociedad Continues Winning Streak
Earlier in the day, Real Sociedad claimed its fourth consecutive win, defeating Leganes 3-0 at Butarque Stadium. Brais Méndez scored the opener, followed by goals from substitute Ander Barrenetxea and Mikel Oyarzabal, sealing the victory.
This marked only the fourth time this season that Sociedad scored multiple goals in a league match, lifting them to sixth place, ahead of Osasuna, which drew 2-2 with Alaves.
In that match, Alaves took an early lead through Kike Garcia’s diving header, but Osasuna rallied with goals from Ante Budimir and Rubén García before Garcia equalized again, securing a point for Alaves. This result marked the first point for new Alaves coach Eduardo Coudet, although the team remains in 15th place without a win in five matches.
