Rising Brazilian tennis star Joao Fonseca has qualified for the Next Gen ATP Finals, set to take place from December 18 to 22 in Jeddah. The tournament will feature the top eight young players of 2024, providing Fonseca with an opportunity to compete against some of the strongest talents in his generation.
The Next Gen ATP Finals has previously showcased emerging stars such as Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jannik Sinner, and Carlos Alcaraz, who have since made significant impacts on the ATP Tour. Alongside Fonseca, this year’s qualifiers include Arthur Fils, Alex Michelsen, Jakub Mensik, Juncheng Shang, Learner Tien, Luca Van Assche, and Nishesh Basavareddy.
In a recent interview with ATP, Fonseca expressed his eagerness to embrace this milestone while emphasizing his desire to forge his own path in the sport. “I think I’m quite mature, and that’s due to the sport. I’m growing fast,” he stated. “It’s my first year as a professional, and while it’s not easy being away from my family and friends, I have to get used to it as it’s my job.”
Reflecting on his journey, Fonseca noted his significant progress over the past year. “At the beginning of the season, I was ranked 700 in the world. Winning the US Open Junior last year made me realize my potential. Although I had committed to the University of Virginia, after my performance in Rio de Janeiro, I couldn’t turn down the chance to join the professional circuit.”
With a goal to compete against the best players under 20, Fonseca remains focused on his individual growth. “I don’t like to compare myself to other players; I want to be myself,” he concluded.
