The All Stars Mega Badminton Championship is set to make history in Nigerian badminton. The tournament will begin on December 11, 2024, in Abuja, with over ₦9 million in cash prizes on offer.
This tournament promises to reshape the sport in Nigeria, offering the largest prize pool in its history. The men’s singles champion will take home ₦1 million, while the women’s singles winner will earn ₦700,000. Each winner in the men’s and women’s doubles categories will receive ₦500,000. Other categories, such as All Stars doubles, 50+ men’s veterans, U-49 men’s doubles, and mixed veterans, will also feature cash prizes and gifts.
Salaudeen Abdulfatai, CEO of LMK Sport Kits Limited and Co-chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, expressed his enthusiasm for the event. “We are working with badminton stakeholders both in Nigeria and abroad to boost the sport. This championship is not just a competition; it highlights the potential of badminton in Nigeria,” he said.
Abdulfatai also praised key contributors to the event, including Peter Duku, Orobosa Okuonghae, Olabisi Fajinmi (née Tiamiyu), Abimbola Odejoke, and Olaoluwa Ebenezer Fagbemi. “These individuals have trusted us with their resources, and we are committed to delivering the best-organized and most rewarding tournament ever,” he added.
The response from athletes has been overwhelming, with over 100 players already registered for the men’s singles, setting a new record. The women’s singles, doubles, and veterans’ categories have also seen a surge in participation.
Abdulfatai noted that even the last 16 and quarterfinalists would receive cash prizes. “This will undoubtedly be the most attended badminton tournament ever held in Nigeria,” he said.
As the championship approaches, the All Stars Mega Badminton Championship stands as a powerful symbol of dedication, teamwork, and a bright future for badminton in Nigeria.
