Arsenal defender Gabriel not only kept Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres at bay during their Champions League clash on Tuesday but also playfully mimicked the forward’s signature goal celebration after scoring his own.
Gabriel netted Arsenal’s third goal in the first half, celebrating by linking his fingers and placing them over his eyes, a gesture reminiscent of Gyokeres’ trademark celebration. The moment sparked laughter among his teammates and was likely a cheeky nod to the Swedish striker, who has emerged as one of European soccer’s most sought-after talents.
“It’s fun that he likes my celebration,” Gyokeres remarked to Viaplay following the match. “He can steal it if he cannot come up with his own.”
Gyokeres, who has scored 24 goals for Sporting across all competitions, had recently netted four goals for Sweden in a Nations League match against Azerbaijan. However, he struggled to make an impact against Arsenal. Earlier in the match, Gabriel successfully tackled Gyokeres near the Arsenal area, gesturing to the crowd in celebration.
Gabriel’s goal contributed to a commanding 3-0 lead for Arsenal at halftime, and the team ultimately secured a 5-1 victory, with Gyokeres unable to find the net. He did come close late in the game, hitting the post after Gabriel had exited due to injury.
“Today he wasn’t that dangerous,” said Arsenal striker Kai Havertz of Gyokeres, “but I think it’s because we defended very well.”
