Slam Icon Responds to Djokovic Critics

Former seven-time Grand Slam champion Justine Henin has rebutted claims that Novak Djokovic’s 2024 season was unsuccessful, emphasizing that the Serbian star achieved his primary goal for the year. Djokovic reached the Wimbledon final, where he was defeated in straight sets by Carlos Alcaraz. This marked the first season since 2017 in which the 24-time Grand Slam champion did not secure a major title.

However, 2024 was also significant for Djokovic as he finally clinched an Olympic gold medal, completing his illustrious career resume. At 37, he now holds the all-time record for Grand Slam titles, has spent the most weeks ranked No. 1 in the world, and added an Olympic gold to his accolades. Djokovic has long expressed his desire to win an Olympic title, making it clear earlier this year that his focus was on the Summer Games.

Despite these achievements, some critics argue that Djokovic’s performance this season fell short of his usual standards, suggesting he may no longer compete at the same level as rising stars Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Henin, however, stated, “Of course his season was successful. He achieved the title he wanted; that was his ultimate goal. He faced various challenges this season, including periods of demotivation and physical management, but he excelled in the one area he aimed to shine. The way he raised his level of play, despite doubts surrounding him, is phenomenal,” she told Eurosport.

Recently, Djokovic, who will turn 38 next May, reassured his critics that he is not considering retirement from professional tennis. He expressed his intention to pursue more Grand Slam titles and continued success in 2025.
