Cornell University head coach Emily Garner celebrated her first home victory as the Big Red defeated Binghamton 68-51 on Thursday evening at Newman Arena. With this win, both teams now hold a 2-2 record for the season.
After trailing early in the second half, Cornell ignited a decisive fourth-quarter performance, launching a 13-0 run that left the Bearcats scoreless for the first 7:16 of the period, ultimately sealing the game for the Big Red.
The team’s offensive execution was highlighted by an impressive display of teamwork, with Cornell assisting on 24 of their 28 field goals, tying for the fourth-best single-game total in school history. Emily Pape led the scoring with 24 points, complemented by seven rebounds and three steals. Summer Parker-Hall also made significant contributions, scoring 15 points and grabbing nine rebounds.
Game Breakdown
First Quarter:Cornell started strong, with Clarke Jackson sinking 1-of-2 free throws and Pape hitting a jumper to take an early 3-0 lead. The teams exchanged baskets until Cornell closed the quarter on a 12-point run, ending the period ahead 19-6.
Second Quarter:Goode began the second quarter with a layup, bringing the score to 19-8. Binghamton responded with a five-point run, narrowing Cornell’s lead to 21-13. A three-pointer from Paige Engels extended the Big Red’s lead to 11, and the half concluded with Cornell leading 30-22.
Third Quarter:Summer Parker-Hall opened the third quarter with a layup to extend Cornell’s lead to 10 points. Binghamton fought back, going on an eight-point run to cut the deficit to four. The teams exchanged points until Binghamton briefly took the lead at 41-40. Pape regained the lead for Cornell, but Binghamton’s Leah Middleton responded, pushing the score to 43-42. Cornell finished the quarter strong, ending with a 48-43 advantage.
Fourth Quarter:The Big Red surged in the fourth quarter, dominating with a 13-point run to lead 61-43 with under four minutes remaining. Although Binghamton attempted to rally with a six-point run, Cornell’s Engels halted the momentum with a layup and an and-one play, pushing the score to 64-49. Despite a pair of free throws from Binghamton’s Kaylee Krysztof, Cornell closed the game with a jumper from Jackson and two free throws from Kilgoe, finishing with a 68-51 victory.
