Vikings Keep Winning Despite Sam Darnold’s Recent Interceptions

The Minnesota Vikings’ season with Sam Darnold at quarterback has hit a midseason snag. Despite a 7-2 record and being second-best in the NFC after Sunday’s 12-7 win over Jacksonville, Darnold’s recent spate of turnovers is a cause for concern. He threw three interceptions against the Jaguars and has five in the last two games.

Coach Kevin O’Connell attributes some of it to Darnold’s confidence in making plays, yet acknowledges the need for improvement. The intercepted passes each had their own issues, but often involved targeting Justin Jefferson deep in enemy territory. The defense stepped up big, earning a game ball and adding to the league-leading interception total. However, the Vikings’ red-zone offense took a hit, dropping in efficiency due to failing to score touchdowns on five trips inside the 20-yard line.

On the injury front, Aaron Jones took a rib hit but expects to play this week, while Darnold hurt his throwing hand yet remained in the game. Looking ahead, the Vikings face two teams with young quarterbacks and struggling offenses, which could offer defensive coordinator Brian Flores more opportunities for success as they aim to navigate through Darnold’s turnover woes and keep their playoff hopes alive.
