When Ed Cooley became Georgetown’s head coach in March 2023, he was already familiar with the program. After 12 seasons at Providence, competing in the Big East, Cooley had watched Georgetown’s decline from a co-champion in 2013 to last place in 2023.
He knew that significant changes were needed, not just surface-level adjustments. After finishing the 2023 season with a 9-23 record and only two conference wins, the Hoyas are ready for a major turnaround in 2024-25.
“I like my team. We are definitely showing progress. I love the pieces we’ve added,” Cooley said in an interview with WTOP last month. “We’re very young, though. We might be the youngest team in the Power Five and definitely the youngest in the Big East. But I like what I see and how hard we’re working together.”
The roster has seen a major overhaul, with nine freshmen and five transfers joining the team this offseason.
“It’s hard to build a program year after year, so you have to build your team,” Cooley explained. “You need players who can not only come to Georgetown but can play for you as the head coach. They need to be tough, accountable, unselfish, and appreciative of what they have. Those are the types of players who typically succeed here.”
