Former Springbok flyhalf Morne Steyn, known for his exceptional kicking accuracy, has shared insights on current flyhalf Manie Libbok’s struggles from the tee. Steyn, who scored 742 points in 68 test matches, notably landed a key penalty against the British and Irish Lions in 2021, mirroring his winning kick from the 2009 series.
In a recent discussion about the Springboks, Steyn addressed Libbok’s kicking challenges. He acknowledged Libbok’s talent, saying, “I think Manie is a great player. His general play and attacking on the field is awesome.”
However, Steyn pointed out that Libbok’s kicking difficulties have not been evident at the club level with the DHL Stormers. He suggested that a key factor at the test level might be affecting Libbok’s rhythm.
“His kicking for the Stormers has been very good and consistent,” Steyn said. “But at the Springboks, I am not sure if he is changing something. What I have noticed is that the shot clock might be putting him off.”
Steyn noted that Libbok appears to focus too much on the time, often kicking with only three or four seconds left on the shot clock. “So that might be one of his problems,” he added.
Despite these issues, Steyn emphasized Libbok’s skills. “He is a great player and a good kicker of the ball,” he said. “There is no problem with his ability. But maybe he gets in his head a bit.”
Steyn believes Libbok has the potential to be an 80% kicker if he can overcome these mental challenges. “He just needs to get out of his head and focus on the job at hand,” he concluded.
