Hunter Stuns Baruch to Win CUNYAC Women’s Tennis Championship

In an exciting match at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, second-seeded Hunter College defeated top-seeded Baruch College, winning 5-4 to capture the 2024 CUNYAC/HSS Women’s Tennis Championship on Thursday. This victory allows the Hawks to avenge last year’s championship loss, where Baruch triumphed 5-1, and a narrow 5-4 defeat during the fall regular season.

With this win, Hunter earns its third conference championship in the past five years, marking the program’s 24th national title. The intense rivalry between Hunter and Baruch has featured these teams in the last five CUNYAC finals. As a result of this victory, the Hawks secure an automatic spot in the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship next spring.

The match reached a crucial point at No. 4 singles, where Anya Aksamentova faced Maria Calvo of Baruch. Aksamentova won in a closely contested battle that required two tiebreakers, finishing with scores of 7-6 (8-6) and 7-6 (7-4), clinching the championship for Hunter.

Baruch started strong in the top singles positions, earning points from the first three matches. Olivia Deguzman dominated at No. 1 singles, winning decisively with a score of 6-0, 6-0. Jennifer Bergmann followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2, while Aishika Yadav added a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 3.

Hunter responded effectively, winning the bottom two singles matches. Kolla secured a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 5, and Summer Nietubicz concluded the day with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 6.
