10-Year NBA Veteran Greg Monroe Retires and Joins Pelicans Staff

Former NBA player Greg Monroe has officially retired from playing basketball and joined the coaching staff of the New Orleans Pelicans.

Monroe last played in the NBA during the 2021-22 season, where he was with the Washington Wizards, Minnesota Timberwolves, Milwaukee Bucks, and Utah Jazz. In 14 games, he averaged 5.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game, shooting 56.1% from the field. Last season, he played in China.

Now at 34 years old, Monroe has transitioned to a new role with the Pelicans as a player development assistant on Willie Green’s coaching staff. The Pelicans also hired Dan Geriot and Jodie Meeks as assistant coaches.

Monroe was selected as the seventh overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft after playing at Georgetown. He had his best years with the Detroit Pistons and Milwaukee Bucks. In the 2013 season, he averaged 16.0 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.3 steals while shooting 48.6% from the field over 81 games with Detroit.

Throughout his ten-year NBA career, Monroe played for the Pistons, Bucks, Raptors, Celtics, Suns, Timberwolves, 76ers, Jazz, and Wizards. He averaged 13.0 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 steals per game, shooting 51.4% from the field across 646 games. He also participated in 29 NBA playoff games with the Bucks, 76ers, Celtics, and Timberwolves.

The Pelicans finished last season with a 49-33 record, earning the eighth seed in the Western Conference, but were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder.
