Coach Joe Schmidt has explained the decision to start Jake Gordon over Nic White for the Wallabies’ match against the All Blacks. Tate McDermott will again begin the game on the bench.
Last week, many were surprised when White was named in the starting lineup against the All Blacks in Sydney. As a veteran player, White is well-regarded, but Gordon was expected to be the first choice.
Gordon started both matches against Wales in July and returned to the lineup for the game against the Springboks in Brisbane. He also started both Tests against Argentina, scoring a try in La Plata. McDermott had previously started against Georgia during the July window. White has also played once under Schmidt, performing well against South Africa.
With New Zealand winning the Bledisloe Cup last weekend, Schmidt has reinstated Gordon in the starting lineup, and White has dropped out of the matchday squad.
“There’s certainly no one dumped. We were really happy with Nic White,” Schmidt told reporters in Wellington. “I explained last week that Nic was the fresh legs. Jake had a big tour in Argentina, and Nic was ready to go.
“Nic took some heavy hits and was pretty beaten up at the end of that game, while Jake is fresh.”
Schmidt expressed confidence in all three halfbacks, emphasizing the importance of having experienced players. Gordon has captained the Waratahs for four years and brings valuable leadership to the team.
If McDermott had been chosen to start, it would not have surprised many fans. He has shown himself to be one of the best halfbacks in Super Rugby and has played in every Rugby Championship Test for the Wallabies this season. McDermott typically provides an impact off the bench.
Last Saturday, he impressed when he entered the game late as the Wallabies dominated at Sydney Olympic Park. Schmidt highlighted McDermott’s effectiveness, saying, “Tate’s had a start this season but he’s also been really effective coming off the bench. He’s a leader and has captained the Wallabies before.
“We’re fortunate to have three strong options at halfback. Tate’s impact off the bench was significant, which sometimes affects starting selections.”
