Comets Volleyball Team to Start Season with Young Roster

The Halifax County High School volleyball team is gearing up for the new season with a roster that may be young but is determined to improve on last year’s third-place finish in the Piedmont District.

Jason Kirkhart steps in as head coach after serving as an assistant for three years. A Halifax resident since 2009, Kirkhart brings extensive experience from his time as a player and coach in volleyball.

“I’ve played in college, with club teams, indoor sixes, and many doubles tournaments over the years,” Kirkhart said. “I wanted to return to the sport to support the team and strengthen the community.”

Under Kirkhart’s leadership, tryouts recently attracted 29 girls for the JV and varsity teams. The team selected 20 players: nine for varsity, 11 for JV, and one manager who will practice with the team.

Before tryouts, 34 students participated in conditioning sessions, and the team also utilized open gym time at Mary Bethune for additional practice.

Last season, the Comets finished with a 13-10 record overall and 7-5 in the Piedmont District, placing third. They reached the district tournament championship but lost to Tunstall 3-0.

“Our goal is to surpass last season’s results,” Kirkhart said. The team has been preparing with conditioning, practice, and upcoming scrimmages, aiming to start the season strong on Tuesday.

This year’s team includes only one senior and several sophomores promoted from JV. As they enter their third week of practice, the players are focused on achieving success on the court.

Kirkhart highlighted the team’s grit and determination as key strengths. “We may not be the tallest or strongest, but we fight hard,” he noted.

While the varsity team is largely new, with only two returning players, Kirkhart is optimistic. “We have a good chance to match or exceed last year’s performance. The goal is to improve on our district record from last season.”
