Joe Launchbury Highlights Harlequins’ Defensive Challenges

England star Joe Launchbury has identified Harlequins’ weak defense as the primary issue from last season. He believes that recent changes, including the appointment of new defense coach Jason Gilmore, could turn things around.

Long-time defense coach Jerry Flannery left Harlequins midway through last season to join the Springboks. This offseason, former Waratahs and Reds coach Gilmore took over the defense role.

Harlequins faced significant defensive issues last season, finishing with the third-worst points difference in the Premiership at -34. They also allowed the third-highest number of points, conceding 520 across 18 league games, averaging 28.9 points per match.

Launchbury emphasized that improving defense is crucial for the team’s success. “The most obvious issue has been our defense,” he said. “It’s something that’s been a problem for Quins for a while. We know we need to address this.”

He acknowledged that while the team’s attacking strategy has its strengths, it is not enough to win trophies without solid defense. “We tried to improve last year, but it wasn’t a quick fix. We need a good preseason to make real changes. With Gilmore’s arrival, we now have a chance to focus on defense as much as we do on attacking.”

Harlequins aim to improve this season and secure their first Premiership title since 2021. Launchbury is optimistic that Gilmore’s fresh approach will make a difference. “New coaches bring new ideas, and Gilmore’s approach to defense is exactly what we needed,” he said. “He’s introduced new techniques that we haven’t seen before.”

Gilmore’s coaching experience includes stints with the Waratahs, Reds, and roles with Australia U20s, Australia A, and the Barbarians. His previous successes include guiding the Junior Wallabies to the 2019 Junior World Championship finals and winning the Oceania Championship.

Despite the new perspective Gilmore brings, Launchbury stresses that the real test will be on the field. “We need to show that we can be a solid, organized defense,” he said. “It’s crucial that we prove we’re not an easy team to score against.”
