Diamondbacks Eye Sweep Against Marlins

The Arizona Diamondbacks are poised to complete a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins after recovering from a previous sweep by the Tampa Bay Rays. The final game of the series is set for Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks will start left-hander Jordan Montgomery, who has a 8-6 record and a 6.25 ERA this season. Montgomery has performed well against the Marlins in his career, holding a 2-0 record with a 2.35 ERA in four games. In his only start in Miami, he posted a 1.80 ERA. Montgomery, who signed a one-year, $25 million deal in March, has had an inconsistent season. After a strong start with a 2.77 ERA in April, his ERA rose above 7.00 for May, June, and July. He has shown improvement this month, with a 1-1 record and a 4.91 ERA. Despite struggles at home, where his ERA is 7.71, he has been effective on the road with a 4-2 record and a 4.26 ERA.

The Diamondbacks have also added infielder Luis Guillorme to their roster. Guillorme will fill in for star second baseman Ketel Marte, who is on the injured list with an ankle injury. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo praised Guillorme, noting his ability to control counts and make defensive plays. “Our front office identifies needs well, and when a player like Luis is available, they act quickly,” Lovullo said.

Outfielder Corbin Carroll, last year’s National League Rookie of the Year, is on a hot streak with five home runs in his last 10 games. Despite his recent form, Carroll’s season stats show a .221 average, 14 homers, and 51 RBIs. He is also leading the league with 11 triples. Carroll will face Marlins right-hander Roddery Munoz, who is 2-7 with a 5.88 ERA. Munoz has struggled at home with a 6.63 ERA in eight games, including seven starts, and has not faced the Diamondbacks before.

The Marlins received a boost from rookie third baseman Connor Norby on Tuesday, who hit two doubles. Marlins manager Skip Schumaker praised Norby’s confidence and work ethic. “He has a high baseball IQ and believes in his skills,” Schumaker said. Norby, acquired from the Orioles last month, was a standout in Triple-A this season with 24 doubles, 17 homers, and 13 steals. Schumaker appreciates Norby’s competitive edge, saying, “He arrived with a strong attitude, which is exactly what we need.”
