A new initiative aims to increase sports participation across Australia, in line with the Play Well Strategy. The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has introduced the Play Well Affiliate program to include a broader range of organizations in promoting sports and physical activity.
The program targets groups that are not classified as national sporting organizations or national sporting organizations for people with disabilities. These groups will now have the opportunity to play a significant role in advancing the strategy’s goal of making sports accessible to everyone.
Richard McInnes, Executive General Manager of Sport and Community Capability and Chair of the Play Well Leadership Group, stated that the program will help more Australians engage in sports and physical activities.
“This initiative supports our goal of creating a connected and inclusive sector. We aim to offer safe, welcoming, and enjoyable sports experiences for everyone,” McInnes said.
He noted that while the ASC has typically worked within established sports frameworks, the new program will recognize the valuable contributions of other sport and recreation organizations. These groups are vital in encouraging Australians to stay active.
Affiliates will gain from the ASC’s resources and expertise, including the use of the Play Well logo and potential eligibility for ASC grants.
Applications for the Play Well Affiliate program are open until September 13.
